Frequently Asked Questions
Am I entitled to healthcare?
Everyone has a right to healthcare, even if you are uninsured. Are you an undocumented migrant and in need of medical care? Even if you do not have a legal residence permit, you have a right to healthcare in the Netherlands.
How does the healthcare system work in the Netherlands?
For all non-emergency care, the point of contact is a general practitioner in your area of residence. Even if you are uninsured and/or undocumented, you have the right to register with a family doctor in your area. Preferably register with the GP where your partner/friend/roommate is also already registered.
Is the family doctor full? Then find another nearest family doctor. The GP will ask you if you can contribute to the cost of care. If you can, please contribute. Don’t have any money? Even then, you are still entitled to care from the family doctor. If the family doctor refuses your care you can contact us yourself or the family doctor can contact you at info@kruispost.nl
I am new to Amsterdam and have no doctor. Where can I go?
If you don’t manage to register with a regular doctor, you can use Kruispost. Do you live outside Amsterdam? Then go to a family doctor near the residence where you stay most often or contact the Red Cross Whatsapp Helpdesk (+3197010286964) and ask for help finding a family doctor.
What can I do if I suddenly need emergency care?
In case of an emergency, you can go to any hospital or call 911 for an ambulance. When in doubt, call your family doctor. Or after 5 p.m. and on weekends, call the Central General Practitioner’s Office 088-0030600.
